Procedure of Sterilization and Sanitization

Sterilization and sanitization are essential procedures in cosmetology to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of infections. Beauty salons and cosmetology centers use many tools and equipment that come into contact with clients’ skin, hair, and nails. If these tools are not cleaned properly, harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi may spread from one client to another.

The proper procedure of sterilization and sanitization helps ensure that all tools, equipment, and work areas remain clean and safe. Following these procedures protects the health of both clients and cosmetologists and helps maintain professional standards in the beauty industry.

Procedure of Sanitization

Sanitization is the process of reducing the number of microorganisms to a safe level. It is usually the first step in maintaining hygiene in a salon environment. The procedure involves cleaning tools, surfaces, and equipment to remove dirt and visible impurities.

Step 1: Removing Visible Debris

The first step in sanitization is removing visible dirt, hair, oils, and cosmetic residues from tools and surfaces. This can be done using brushes, tissues, or running water. Removing debris ensures that the cleaning process becomes more effective.

Step 2: Washing with Soap or Detergent

After removing debris, tools should be washed with soap or detergent and clean water. This helps remove oils and remaining impurities. Combs, brushes, and other salon tools are often cleaned in this way before further disinfection.

Step 3: Applying Sanitizing or Disinfectant Solution

Once the tools are cleaned, they should be treated with a disinfectant or sanitizing solution. The tools may be soaked in the solution for a specific period of time to kill harmful microorganisms.

Step 4: Drying the Tools

After sanitization, tools should be removed from the solution and dried with clean towels or allowed to air dry. Proper drying helps prevent the growth of bacteria and keeps tools ready for use.

Step 5: Storing in a Clean Place

Sanitized tools should be stored in a clean and covered container or cabinet. Proper storage prevents contamination and keeps the tools hygienic until they are used again.

Procedure of Sterilization

Sterilization is the process of completely destroying all microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. This procedure is usually applied to metal instruments and tools that require a higher level of cleanliness.

Step 1: Pre-Cleaning the Tools

Before sterilization, tools must be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt and debris. Pre-cleaning ensures that the sterilization process works effectively and reaches all surfaces of the tools.

Step 2: Preparing the Sterilization Equipment

Sterilization equipment such as an autoclave or sterilizing oven should be prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Proper temperature and pressure settings must be maintained for effective sterilization.

Step 3: Placing Tools in the Sterilizer

Clean tools should be placed carefully inside the sterilization equipment. The tools should not be overcrowded, as proper spacing allows heat or steam to reach all surfaces.

Step 4: Running the Sterilization Cycle

The sterilization equipment is then operated for a specific period at the required temperature and pressure. During this process, all microorganisms present on the tools are destroyed.

Step 5: Cooling and Storage

After the sterilization cycle is completed, the tools should be allowed to cool down before handling. Sterilized tools must be stored in clean, sealed containers or sterilized storage units to maintain their sterility.

Workplace Sanitization Procedure

In addition to cleaning tools, salon work areas must also be sanitized regularly. Workstations, chairs, mirrors, and floors should be cleaned with disinfectant solutions. Waste materials such as hair, used tissues, and cosmetic residues should be disposed of properly in covered bins.

Regular cleaning of the salon environment helps maintain hygiene and creates a comfortable atmosphere for clients and staff.

Personal Hygiene During Procedures

Cosmetologists must also maintain personal hygiene while performing sterilization and sanitization procedures. Hands should be washed before and after each treatment, and gloves should be used when necessary.

Clean uniforms and proper grooming also contribute to maintaining a hygienic workplace.

Importance of Following Proper Procedures

Following the correct procedures of sterilization and sanitization ensures safe beauty treatments and prevents the spread of infections. These practices protect the health of clients and professionals and improve the reputation of the salon.

Clients feel more confident when they see that proper hygiene procedures are being followed during beauty treatments.

Conclusion

The procedures of sterilization and sanitization are essential for maintaining hygiene in the cosmetology profession. Sanitization involves cleaning and reducing microorganisms on tools and surfaces, while sterilization completely eliminates all microorganisms.

By following proper cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and storage procedures, cosmetologists can maintain a safe working environment and provide hygienic beauty services to their clients.
