Classification and Identification of Nail Diseases and Disorders

Nails are an important part of the body that protect the tips of the fingers and toes. Healthy nails are smooth, strong, and have a natural pink color. However, sometimes nails may develop diseases or disorders due to infections, poor hygiene, injuries, or health problems. In cosmetology, it is important to understand nail diseases and disorders so that proper care can be given and unsafe treatments can be avoided.

Nail conditions are generally classified into two categories: nail diseases and nail disorders. Nail diseases are usually caused by infections or medical conditions and often require medical treatment. Nail disorders are abnormalities in the nail structure that may occur due to injury, poor nutrition, or improper nail care.

Classification of Nail Diseases

Nail diseases are conditions that affect the health of the nail and may require medical attention. Cosmetologists should not treat these conditions but should recognize them and advise the client to seek medical care.

Fungal Infections (Onychomycosis)

This is a common nail disease caused by fungal infection. The nail may become thick, discolored, and brittle. It may also separate from the nail bed.

Paronychia

Paronychia is an infection of the skin around the nail. It causes redness, swelling, pain, and sometimes pus formation near the nail fold.

Nail Psoriasis

Nail psoriasis is a condition related to the skin disease psoriasis. It may cause pitting, discoloration, or thickening of the nails.

Classification of Nail Disorders

Nail disorders are conditions that affect the appearance or growth of the nail but are not usually caused by infection. These conditions may occur due to injury, poor nail care, or nutritional deficiencies.

Leukonychia

Leukonychia is a condition where white spots or lines appear on the nail plate. It is usually caused by minor injury to the nail matrix.

Onycholysis

Onycholysis occurs when the nail plate separates from the nail bed. It may be caused by injury, infection, or certain chemicals.

Brittle Nails

Brittle nails are weak and easily break or split. This condition may be caused by dryness, frequent exposure to chemicals, or poor nutrition.

Hangnails

Hangnails are small pieces of torn skin around the nail. They may occur due to dryness or improper nail cutting.

Identification of Nail Diseases and Disorders

Identifying nail diseases and disorders is an important responsibility for cosmetologists. Before performing manicure or pedicure treatments, the cosmetologist should carefully examine the nails and surrounding skin.

  • Check for discoloration or unusual nail color.
  • Observe any swelling, redness, or pain around the nail.
  • Look for thickened or deformed nails.
  • Check for separation of the nail from the nail bed.
  • Observe any spots, lines, or unusual nail growth.

If any signs of nail disease are noticed, the cosmetologist should avoid performing the treatment and advise the client to consult a medical professional.

Importance for Cosmetologists

Understanding nail diseases and disorders helps cosmetologists provide safe nail care treatments. It also helps prevent the spread of infections and ensures that clients receive proper guidance when medical attention is required.

Conclusion

Nail diseases and disorders affect the health and appearance of the nails. Diseases are usually caused by infections and require medical treatment, while disorders may occur due to injury or poor nail care. Proper identification of these conditions helps cosmetologists maintain hygiene and provide safe and professional manicure and pedicure services.
